Malaysian Gamers Spent $673 Million On Video Games Alone in 2019
Malaysia is starting to become a gaming hub in Southeast Asia, with international game companies from all facets of the industry opening up in Kuala Lumpur in 2020.
This surge of interest in Malaysia’s gaming market is enlightened by Newzoo’s latest report on the trends and spending behaviour of Malaysian gamers.
The biggest insight is with 20.1 million Malaysian gamers spending $673 million on video games alone in 2019, revenue-wise it is one of the biggest gaming markets in Southeast Asia. Comparatively, Indonesia alone spent $ 1.1 billion in games in 2019.
Another insight from Newzoo is with the market split between consoles, PCs, and mobile; with a majority of gamers playing on mobile phones at 75 percent, and PC and console following close behind at 66 and 55 percent respectively.
87 percent of mobile gamers, on the other hand, spend money on in-game items. Paired that with the biggest mobile games in the country being Candy Crush Saga and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, it seems that Malaysians are decked out in power-ups and skins for both games.
A previous report on Newzoo also showed that the mobile game industry in Southeast Asia boasts revenues of up to $2.6 billion in 2019, so it makes sense for Malaysia’s gamers to be spending as much as they do.
