Thai fintech company raises S $ 42.2 million
UOB's private equity arm, UOB Risk Management, jointly led a $ 31.2 million (S $ 42.2 million) financing for Thai fintech startup Lightnet.
In the Series A financing of Bangkok-based Thai fintech startup Lightnet, UOB Risk Management was one of the top three investors, and the other two were Hanwha Investment Securities and Seven Bank.
Chachaval Jiaravanon is one of the co-founders of Lightnet, whose family runs Charoen Pokphand Group, Thailand's largest organization. Another founder is Tridbodi Arunanondchai, a former investment banker.
Lightnet said that all 7-11 retail stores in Japan and about 69,200 convenience stores worldwide are owned by investor Seven Bank. More than 9,000 7-11 and Starbucks in Taiwan, China and the Philippines are part of another investor, Uni-President Asset Holdings, an investment subsidiary of Uni-President Enterprises Corp.
The Bangkok-based startup offers remittance services by leveraging blockchain and linking its existing financial system with its network of cash agents, which refers to places where cash can be issued, such as convenience stores.
The company seeks to replace the informal banking and Swift processes currently used by banks, and will primarily target Southeast Asian foreign employees who do not have their own bank accounts as customers.
The funds raised will be used to increase Lightnet's investment in the basic blockchain technology of Stellar Network (a fintech blockchain partner) and develop a financial mobile network.
Lightnet CEO Suvicha Sudchai said that the Thai fintech startup's core platform is ready and is expected to be operational for the first time in the first quarter of 2020.
He added that the company will work with MoneyGram, MoneyGram, Seven Bank, Yeahka and Ksher payment and remittance alliances from multiple countries in Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asia to ensure effective activation.
