-《Elden Ring: Game of Thrones 》

Opinion: Why Doesn’t Esports Have a Bigger Presence at E3?

Now in its 25th year, E3—or the Electronic Entertainment Expo—is considered by many to be the mecca of videogaming. Even as some publishers (Sony and Electronic Arts , for example) have pulled out of the annual convention to do their own thing, E3 still packs in an incredible number of game and hardware announcements across the span of just a few days.

E3 has broad name recognition, but while it’s known as one of the year’s ultimate gaming events, it’s hardly the ultimate esports event. While there were competitions and other esports-related events during E3 this year, esports was a tiny part of what is routinely a monumental week for the videogame industry.

Here’s an overview of esports-related events and announcements that happened at E3 2019 last week, and some perspective on why we haven’t seen more overlap between esports and E3.

E3 2019’s Esports Events

E3 week has gradually expanded with new conferences and events over the years, beginning earlier and earlier before the official show floor days. Nintendo kicked things off this time around on Saturday, June 8 with the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate  World Championship 2019 and Splatoon 2 World Championship 2019, as well as a Super Mario Maker 2 Invitational 2019. As with other Nintendo-run esports events, no cash prizes were awarded. It was all about bragging rights, a trophy, and a trip to Los Angeles to compete for gaming glory.

Following Ubisoft’s press conference on Monday, June 10, the company broadcasted a Twitch Rivals x Rainbow Six Siege Celebrity Showdown match. The partnership with Twitch saw two popular musicians—Faheem “T-Pain” Najm and Miles “Lil Yachty” McCollum—captain opposing teams comprised of notable streamers, with a $100K USD total prize pool split between the streamers and charity.

During the actual E3 show floor days from June 11-13, the Entertainment Software Association and Greenlit Content (acquired last week by Rogue  parent company, ReKTGlobal ) co-produced the E3 Esports Zone 2019 area. The space featured multiple competitions, including a PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS  pro-am tournament with Team Liquid  players, as well as a Fortnite “free play” session with NBA player Jeremy Lin’s Team J.Storm squad. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and NBA 2K19  competitions also took place.

The E3 Esports Zone 2019 also had a content stage with a packed schedule of more than 55 gaming-related interviews, demos, and discussions—but only a few of them had a clear esports tie. That included an interview with esports commentator Paul “Redeye” Chaloner, for example, and an “Esports Culture and Community” discussion by caster Jake Kulinski.

Elsewhere at the show, the ESA’s “We Are” initiative sought to increase diversity in the gaming industry, and featured a number of panel discussions that included esports and streaming-centric topics. Representatives from Cloud9 and Gen.G were panelists for “How to Get a Professional Sponsorship as an Esports Player and Content Creator,” for example, while a Riot Games employee was part of the “Championing Diverse Voices in Video Games” panel.

All told, it was arguably the strongest esports showing to date at E3, representing a diverse mix of competition and behind-the-scenes industry insight. However, these efforts were overshadowed by E3’s bread and butter: the bevy of announcements and game reveal events.

10 of E3 2019’s biggest announcements

E3 2019 had plenty of game reveals and other notable announcements, but few had any real connection to esports. Here’s a look at 10 of the show’s biggest announcements, and any potential esports component to each.

—Xbox Project Scarlett: Microsoft will release a powerful new Xbox console in late 2020, which will launch with shooter Halo Infinite. The last game, 2015’s Halo 5: Guardians , has awarded more than $7M in esports prize pools to date according to Esports Earnings.

– The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: Nintendo’s critically-acclaimed, single-player Switch adventure will see a sequel. The original game had no multiplayer component and the series has had no online competitive element to date.

– Cyberpunk 2077: CD Projekt RED’s ambitious, open-world role-player features actor Keanu Reeves as a character. He also appeared at Microsoft’s E3 press conference. Cyberpunk 2077 is a single-player game.

– Watch Dogs Legion: The third Watch Dogs open-world action game shifts to London in the wake of Brexit, where players can control any character seen in the city. Up to four players can play together in a cooperative mode, but it’s not primed to be a competitive esports game.

– Marvel’s Avengers: Based on the comic book series (but not the films), Square Enix’s Avengersgame will have some sort of multiplayer component—details still TBA.

– Final Fantasy VII Remake: The first part of the modern PlayStation 4 remake of the 1997 role-playing classic will launch in March 2020. It’s a purely single-player game.

– Elden Ring: Game of Thrones creator is teaming with Dark Souls mastermind Hidetaka Miyazaki to create an epic fantasy adventure. Previous FromSoftware Souls games have included cooperative online elements, as well as player-versus-player combat, but no dedicated competitive multiplayer mode.

– Microsoft acquires Double Fine: Double Fine Productions, maker of quirky games like Psychonautsand Broken Age, has joined Xbox Game Studios. Double Fine typically creates smaller, more experimental games, not larger-scale competitive experiences.

– Animal Crossing: New Horizons: Nintendo’s colorful, yet low-key life simulation sequel will see a new Switch entry in March. Animal Crossing lets you interact with other players, but it is not a head-to-head multiplayer game.

– Streaming services: Google and Bethesda showed off streaming services, while Ubisoft and Microsoft revealed subscription services. All of them potentially get more games to more people, but don’t have a specific esports component.

Why E3 Isn’t An Esports Show

Esports may not be an ideal fit for E3 due to the show’s primary focus on upcoming, as-yet-unreleased games. We can see games on the horizon that might be fun esports offerings, such as Microsoft’s 4v4 brawler Bleeding Edge, or Ubisoft’s roller derby/sports hybrid Roller Champions. Both were featured prominently in publisher press conferences during the week.

However, both games are still a way out from release, and publishers are unlikely to declare a game an esport this early in advance and begin setting expectations for post-release support. Esports initiatives come after the release. There’s only so much time and attention span to go around at E3, with nearly all of the major publishers showing off games and attempting to make an impact amidst all of the other reveals.

There were annualized esports games that will replace current editions, such as Madden NFL 20, FIFA 20, and eFootball PES 2020 (the renamed successor to Pro Evolution Soccer), but those lightly enhanced games are unlikely to usher in any major changes to each respective competitive scene. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare could have a larger effect, given the popularity of the shooter series’ sub-brand, but next year will also bring about Activision Blizzard’s geolocated, franchised Call of Dutyleague.

All we can really do right now is speculate about the potential changes on the horizon for that game, along with others. Will the newly-detailed Apex Legends  Season 2 content stop EA’s battle royale shooter from declining in both revenue and Twitch viewership? Will Gears 5 pump fresh life into the competitive Gears of War scene? Can Halo Infinite—launching in late 2020 alongside the next Xbox console—do the same for Halo? We can only guess. And in any case, those reveals didn’t focus on the esports components, just the games themselves.

E3 has been letting members of the general public in over the last couple years, but it’s still primarily a trade show for a wide array of people in and around the videogame industry: creators, investors, marketers, retailers, and media. They are there to see the future of videogames, not necessarily the future of esports. There are other, more fan-centric events that are a better fit for tournaments, such as PAX or DreamHack. Those events have a built-in audience of potentially interested viewers, whereas many E3 attendees are simply too busy or overwhelmed by work to take in a tournament.

Esports’ role in E3 may continue to rise as the industry grows and a wider number of gamers begin following leagues and tournaments. However, as of now, esports doesn’t really have a place to shine at gaming’s greatest showcase for new and upcoming games and hardware. It’s not very compatible with the show’s forward-looking approach on unreleased games, not to mention a more industry-centric trade show audience.

Beneficial overlap is great when it feels like a natural addition, but E3 can primarily be its own thing for gaming. The esports industry has no problem putting on its own large-scale, custom-designed events that can let the excitement of competition stand on its own merits.
